Sources & bibliography

A documentation project is only as good as its sources. Here's what we build on and how we handle them.

Every entry in the archive draws on published scholarship, official records and our own fieldwork. We aim to cite what we rely on at the level of each site, and to be honest when the record is thin or accounts disagree. The categories below describe the kinds of sources we use across the project.

Archaeology & official surveys

  • Reports and inventories of the Department of Archaeology & Museums and provincial directorates
  • UNESCO World Heritage nomination dossiers and periodic reports for Pakistani sites
  • Colonial-era archaeological surveys and district gazetteers [TODO: list specific ones you use]

Scholarship

  • Academic books and peer-reviewed papers on the history, architecture and archaeology of the region
  • Museum and university publications
  • [TODO: name a few key works / authors that recur in your research]

Primary & field sources

  • Our own site visits, observations and photography
  • Inscriptions, plaques and on-site signage, where present
  • Local knowledge and oral accounts, clearly flagged as such

How we handle conflicting accounts

Dates, attributions and even names are frequently contested in heritage records, especially across centuries of transliteration. Where reputable sources disagree, we prefer to present the range rather than silently choose one — and we update entries as better evidence emerges. Read more about our process.

Found an error or a better source?

We take corrections seriously. Send us the detail — ideally with a reference — and we'll review and update the entry.
